Why “ease the pain”?

It seems like the president and congress are desperately trying to “ease the pain” of the taxpayers that they supposedly feel when buying gasoline these days. But why do that? Pain is good - it provides a strong incentive to not use too much gasoline in the first place - reduce consumption and you will feel less pain. That’s the only way…

Oh, and don’t bring me the argument about “but it hurts the economy” - does it really?

I think it may well get there this summer - at least for premium grade. Regular was $3.17 at the Rotten Robbie near our house this morning. And they’re usually the cheapeast. Midgrade $3.27 and Premium $3.37 …
