More opinions about the Swiss

Scott Adams in The Dilbert Blog:

The Swiss think they are all superior because they stay out of wars. I think they’re just lucky that they’re freezing their chocolate covered nuts.

Proud owner of sakku #17

What is a “sakku”, you might ask? Well, sakku is binder-sized canvas bag made out of recycled canvas and fitted with a flexible solar panel that can charge your cellphone, PDA, iPod, etc. Optionally, it can be equipped with an extra battery, in case you’re not always charging anything - the battery will store the electricity and you can use it later to charge your device.

Now, you might ask - why do I need this? I can simply charge the devices while driving in my car. Well, for one thing, hopefully you’re not always sitting in your car and besides, using your sakku is way cooler than charging your devices in your car. :-)

sakku is made by a Swiss startup company.

California ISO website suffering from the heat as well.

It’s probably just overloaded because everybody is trying to see how much power we’re currently using around here…
Anyway, after they had turned off the AC earlier this morning here in our office building (I guess to save power), they have just turned it back on. And today isn’t supposed to be as hot as yesterday was anyway.

So Google has a “Switzerland like approach to content”?

Interesting quote from John Battelle here:

John Battelle’s Searchblog: YouTube Worth $1 BIllion? But Who Will Buy It?

Google doesn’t have it in its DNA to run a service like YouTube (though Google, with its Switzerland like approach to content, is the best fit, in my opinion).

I wonder what exactly he means by that and/or what image he has of Switzerland… I can only guess that he’s referring to the recent hoopla related to the US Department of Justice requesting information about search queries, etc. and them not wanting to give it to them. So I guess he thinks this is kind of like a Swiss Bank that would not hand over information about bank accounts and stuff. Gee, is this still the only thing Americans think of when they hear “Switzerland”? What about all our clocks, fine cheese and chocolate? ;-)

Flickrs tubes are clogged …

Well, as we all know, the Internet is really a series of tubes. It appears that Flickrs tubes are clogged right now:

(btw, FlickrBlog is also missing a background color …)

I must have missed the moment when they finally invented the transporter.

Shuttle lands in Florida after 13-day mission - Yahoo! News

Piers Sellers and Michael Fossum made three spacewalks, including a repair of the station’s transporter so construction of the half-built space station can resume.

Huh? They have a transporter up there? Why do they still bother with the rockets then? This should solve all our transportation problems - not just in space, but also on Earth. Of course, there will always be people that feel like Bones McCoy and will be reluctant to use the device, for fear that their molecules might be totally messed up afterwards … ;-)

No Background: The Inquirer

No Background: Google Sitemaps

Google now marks new applications as “test” and not “beta”

Or is “test” just the precursor to “beta” - similar to “alpha”? And then after “beta”, will it become “gamma” like Flickr? :-)

Websites with no background color or image

I have posted about this before - there’s still a surprising number of websites out there that do not have a background color specified. And since I have the default color in my browsers set to something other than the default white (just to make sure I don’t forget to set the color on the sites that I work on myself), I tend to notice these things. I found another one today - Peter, you should get that fixed. Granted, it’s not a big issue, since most people will have the default white background in their browsers, but it bothers me anyway.

Update: It even happens to Yahoo every now and then:
