Facebook opened up their platform to some extent and I've read that Linkedin is looking to do the same, but that's still far from a standard API. I believe there are at least two issues; one is that most SN's want to hold onto their networks. The other is whether or not the public is ready for this level of openness. Didn't Microsoft try passport and fail? I realize that the purpose for passport was for authentication/single sign on but still, it was an attempt to centralize a user's access and identity. I'll check out FOAF. I like the concept, but I think we’re a long way off from a standard api for social networks. How hard can it be.... Sooner or later a company / individual will come up with an alternative to the known social networking sites which will be open source.
